In “New York State of Mind: The Songs of Billy Joel,” you’ll hear the 2013 BroadwayWorld New York Cabaret Award Winner for “Best Female Vocalist” deliver unique and stirring interpretations of classic Joel songs.
Pamela considers the songs of Billy Joel to be the soundtrack of her life and has been dreaming about performing them since she was a little girl growing up on Long Island. Pamela’s understanding of Joel’s Long Island roots, and passion for American popular song make her an ideal performer of this material.
Here’s what the critics had to say about Pamela Lewis’ show, “New York State of Mind: The Songs of Billy Joel“:
“Pamela Lewis offered new, vibrant, self-created arrangements of 15 Joel compositions, performing them in her own self-confident style . . . If you care at all about the art of cabaret and its ability to illuminate a life we beg you not to miss it . . . “ –Bistro Awards
“A zestful romp through the early catalogue of one of New York‘s most prolific songwriting native sons . . . It’s cool when a woman sings an entire show of songs written by a man and puts her own spin on them by changing the feel, the tempo, and the arrangements. Lewis does all that with verve and then some in this show . . . Lewis is an entertainer, as she gestured with her hands in a way that one audience member told me afterward, “Cast a spell.” . . . –BroadwayWorld.com
“Lewis delves into the passion and pain that infuses [Billy Joel’s] work. She has a rich voice with the touch of a twang that is equally effective in Billy Joel’s rock/pop style.” –TheaterPizzazz.com
With new arrangements created by Lewis, Bill Heller (her Musical Director/piano accompanist) and guitarist husband John Hurley (Marcus Parsley on trumpet and Ritt Henn on bass round out the band), Pamela transforms Joel’s classic songs into a sound of her own. Directed by well-known British cabaret star Barb Jungr, New York State of Mind presents Pamela Lewis just the way she is—a sassy singer who conveys an on-stage confidence and down-to-earth personality through her smooth, sensual vocals.
