Before you hunker down for the long winter, join us for the last Twilight in the Gardens of 2015! On Friday, October 23, from 7:00 – 10:00 PM, Twilight in the Gardens will end the season by going ‘down the rabbit hole’ with the ethereal music of Melanie Hsu and light-up sculptures with Teaching Artist Brenda Zhang.
Plunge into the chilling world of cellist, vocalist, and songwriter Melanie Hsu as she weaves her musical narrative of past and present, light and dark. The Rabbit Hole Series was created by Hsu as a way of going beyond normal venues and performances. Her vivid soundscape will be created using a cacophony of musicians, including 4 vocalists, keys, cello, upright bass, guitar and percussions. Hsu seeks to perform in nontraditional spaces in nontraditional ways— a perfect match for PMG and the Twilight series.
While you enjoy the entrancing music be sure to explore the world of installation art with artist Brenda Zhang, as she delves into the world of light and darkness. Zhang will create her own mini installation of lamp sculptures throughout the mosaic labyrinth at PMG based off of her 2013 installation Light Bulb Little Bombs. Participants can also make their own light sculpture with LED lights!
Be sure to take advantage of our regular Twilight offerings as well: Challenge yourself with an Instagram hunt to win prizes, or hop on a mini guided tour to learn more about the fascinating story of PMG. Don’t forget to BYOBBS (Bring Your Own Booze, Blanket, and Snacks)!
Tickets go on sale October 9 and will be available online, by phone at (215) 733-0390, or in person at Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens. These events do sell out, so guests are encouraged to purchase tickets ahead of time!
This special “rabbit hole” edition of Twilight in the Gardens is a collaboration between Melanie Hsu, Brenda Zhang, and Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens.

ABOUT THE PERFORMER AND ARTISTS:
PERFORMER Mel Hsu and her cello, Charles, are rather inseparable. Although Mel was raised as a classical cellist, she and Charles have been coaxing each other into realms of indie soul, folk, hip-hop and jazz for the past seven years. Her current work, I Was a Phoenix, explores the power of narrative memory as a form of reconciliation and rebirth. As a teaching artist, Mel works with Philadelphia-based organizations Spiral Q, Girls Rock Philly, and All Around This World.
TEACHING ARTIST Brenda Zhang is a Philadelphia-based artist, educator, and designer. Her work is concerned with conflict, agency, and accountability at the boundaries between natural and built worlds. She has taught at Philadelphia University and Brown University, and currently works as a painter and woodworker.
